no straws please the last straw

Even as someone who is passionate and dedicated to living as sustainably as possible, straws are something I just can’t seem to get away from. If you remember to ask, the staff forget or I forget to ask or someone else orders a drink for me and doesn’t ask for no straw or I assume the drink won’t come with a straw (gin on ice - seriously! I was very annoyed when it was served with a straw). This is why it’s great to see campaigns, like The Last Straw, targeting the venues - bars, restaurants and cafes. It would just be easier for everyone if they didn’t have plastic straws in the first place (in fact, plastic straws should be banned along with microbeads)!

Straws are a single use plastic that never biodegrades, they take many years to break down but that’s just into smaller pieces. Marine life are adversely affected by straws and they are one of the most common items picked up on beach clean ups. For an item that is used for such a short period of time, it has a devastating impact as this video demonstrates (warning: it does contain distressing content).

The Last Straw’s mission is to end the use of plastic straws in venues Australia wide. February 3rd is International Straw Free day. You can help the cause by:

  1. Saying “no straw please” when ordering a drink.

  2. Supporting venues that have signed up to be a straw free venue.

  3. Become a The Last Straw ambassador.

  4. Donating to The Last Straw to help them spread the word.

So don't suck and say no to straws!
